Arts & Antiracism

Musicians in Intersectional Communities (M.I.C.) is a student-initiated group of the Moores School of Music.

The group has identified the following purposes to guide their activities:

  • To build awareness of intersectionality within MSM: gender, race, sexual orientation, culture, religion/faith, ableness, to name a few.
  • To create a safe place for students to learn about, discuss, and voice issues related to various identities
  • To build visibility of diversity within music and the MSM

The group would like to hold events once a month or every other month. The format of events would consist of: a guest speaker addressing topic of discussion; a Q & A session or a small-group breakout discussion session related to guest speaker’s presentation (second half).

Some initial event topics include:

  • Systemic racism within music making and learning spaces
  • Immigration/DACA and how it affects music students
  • Challenging “traditional” music director models
  • Challenging “traditional” Western Canon of music study
  • Gender biases in music
  • Discrimination faced by LGBTQIA musicians
