Interlibary loan enables you to request PDFs of articles from journals to which the library does not subscribe, as well as from journal issues which the library only has in print. You can also request print books which UH Libraries does not own.
UH Libraries uses a system called ILLiad for interlibrary loans.
See the boxes below for information on how to:
Watch the YouTube video below for a quick tutorial on how to set up your ILLiad account, which will allow you to request articles via interlibrary loan.
Additionally, here are step-by-step instructions (including screenshots) on how to set up your account.
First, visit the link below.
Read the Terms of Service and click on the "First Time Users Click Here" link at the bottom of the page.
Fill out the form.
Choose the appropriate "Status" - Graduate and Professional students should choose "Graduate."
“Delivery Location” is where any print books that you request via interlibrary loan will be sent. If you are located in or near Health 1/Health 2, choose “Health Sciences Library;" if you are located in the Fertitta Family College of Medicine building, choose "Medical Library."
Click "Submit Information" at the bottom of the page.
You now have an active ILLiad account and can begin requesting articles or books.
Here are step-by-step instructions (including screenshots) on how to request articles through PubMed.
First, as always, make sure you access PubMed via the link below, rather than through pubmed.gov.
Search as you normally would, and click on "UH Find This Item" for full text.
If we do not subscribe to the journal, or we only have it in print, you will see a screen like the one below. Click on "Sign in."
Click on "UH (Cougarnet)."
Login using your CougarNet credentials.
Click on "UH Interlibrary Loan Request (Cougarnet ID)."
Log in to your ILLiad account (instructions for account setup can be found above).
The Username is your CougarNet username, and the Password is your CougarNet password at the time you set up your ILLiad account.
The article information should be pre-filled for you. Please note: For very new online-only articles which have not yet been assigned to a journal volume, you may need to enter "n/a" into the Volume field. Scroll down and click on "Submit Request."
You will be notified by email when the article is available for download - usually within a few days or less. Login to ILLiad and click on "Web Delivery" from the menu on the left.
From there, you can download the PDF full text of the articles you have received via interlibrary loan.
Be sure to access your articles before they expire (approximately 30 days after they are posted).
