National Subject Area Standards
While the United States has no formal national curriculum, there are many sets of standards for various subject areas that are recommended nationally by different organizations. They are not necessarily endorsed by the government. Below are some of those standards
- Curriculum Standards for Social StudiesSnippets of this publication are available through this site. These are the standards published by the National Council for the Social Studies
- National standards for historyOnline edition of the National standards for history, developed by the National Center for History in the Schools
- National Geography StandardsEach standard is outlined with depth given in a mini essay on the topic.
- National Curriculum Standards for Social StudiesProduced by the National Council for the Social Studies, the first part of these standards are available online. A print copy of the remaining sections has been ordered for the library.
- National Standards for Civics and GovernmentFrom the center for Civics Education.

- Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS)Links to the state standard for education K-12 in a variety of subject areas.
- Texas College and Career Readiness StandardsA set of standards developed to describe the skills and abilities that students should have in 4 broad subject areas by graduation. Mathematics, Social Studies, English/Language Arts and Science, as well as some cross disciplinary standards.
- McREL: Mid-continent Research for Education and LearningThis site hosted by McREL (Mid-Continent Regional Education Laboratory) pulls together nationally developed curriculum standards in major subject areas as well as links to supporting items. It contains a search feature that allows the user to search on a specific term or subject.
